Acer Iconia Tab A700 Review

Acer Iconia  A700 Review:

A well-known PC manufacturing expert Acer is no new in the tablet business. It is trying to make a mark in Android tablets from its Iconia series Android based tablets. The previous tablets released by the company are gone in veins so the company is ready again with its new Acer Iconia A700 Android tablet. There was nothing wrong with any of the Acer tablets the major issue remained to be the X-factor which was missing from its tablets. So the company is releasing its new product and lets find out whether it has an edgy factor or not.

Acer Iconia Tab A700

Powered with processing monster, this tablet is powered by the latest version of Nvidia Tegra 3 version of Quad Core CPU. It sports a 10.1 inch IPS LCD screen with a 1080P Full HD resolution (1920×1200) with a whopping 224ppi pixel density which is nearly same as the new apple MacBook. It is greeted with 1GB of DDR2 Ram with 3 options of 16 Gb/ 32 Gb/ 64 Gb onboard storage. That’s not all it has a Micro SD card slot with expandable memory of 32 Gb. Acer has added Dolby surround sound Enhancement. It is having an inbuilt Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. Acer has also added a Full USB slot for usage of Flash drive and accessories which is always great. It sports a 5 Mega pixel rear camera with 720p video recording capability and also a secondary camera for video calling. It also sports the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice cream Sandwich.

Relatively same as the previous Iconia 510. When we first look into the Acer Iconia A700 it seems as a redefined version of the previous iteration tablet of the company. If we look into the tablet we find it the same looking tablet with just higher resolution display of 1920×1200 fitted in 10.1 inch LCD. Actually we find it pretty cool, the curved edges makes it easier and comfortable to hold it in portrait mode. An Expandable Micro SD card slot is always preferable and the addition of Micro HDMI port gives it an extra edge over the other tablets. Unfortunately we feel that Tegra 3 is not just made to handle extra high graphics. We’ll expand this later on.

Can be painful in handling, after looking and using the tablet we feel it is on heavier side, the weight is not evenly distributed.  It almost weighs 1.5 pounds. If the tablet is used for the house hold purposes then it is good but playing games make our hands full of pain. With the thickness of 0.43 inches this is definitely on the thicker side, but it does not create that much problem as curved edges and rubberized back increases the grip and keeps the tab from looking bulky.

Acer Iconia Series

Showstopper Display, the show stopper for the tab is the display, the 1920×1200 high density resolution display. The display is not as denser as the latest generation of iPad but does the job very well. The texts look crisp and clear with good color reproduction and watching HD videos in the tablet is itself a treat. It is the highest resolution display ever introduced in an Android tablet. The disappointment comes in viewing angles with not great viewing anglebecause of the high amount of glare present. Whenever there is moderate amount of sunlight the screen is nearly unusable due to poor brightness level. We noticed the screen getting dirtier faster than the Galaxy Tab and iPad.

Software and Media

With Android 4.0 Experience, it is powered with the Google’s first unified version of Android for both Tablets and Smartphones. There are some OEM modifications made in the tab but not as much as HTC and Samsung does to the Operating System Experience (which we really liked). A good addition is the Acer ring which is the traditional Acer style shortcut screen , it gets activate as soon as the green button is touched on the navigation toolbar and it loads up shortcuts for apps and some functions which is user customizable. There is a customizable option of quick launch apps in the lock screen, which is in itself a treat. There are a bunch of preloaded apps and access to Google play store as well as the Amazon App store.

A complete gift for HD, if we consider the tablet Acer has emphasized lot on the display and it clearly shows off. Full HD resolution means playback of HD movies and games. In recent days there is increase in amount of HD movies so users can rent some movies from Play Store or Even the Netflix. The stereo speakers are not excellent but they are loud enough for anyone to have a good movie and gaming experience. There are an additional bunch of audio equalizers in the setting menu which is a nice addition.

Satisfactory Camera, if we looktowards the camera it produces some descent image with good quality color reproductions. The main disappointment is the presence of noise when shooting in bright light. In low light condition it is even worse the image quality is definitely low in par with its competitors. The front facing camera is good enough for the G+ hangouts and video chat and works pretty well.

Performance and Battery

Simply not justifies its price, with the spec sheet looking good on paper it seemed to have a powerful performance but in real time story is different. In search of high budget tablet at around $449 you will get this, at this price point one would definitely want a hard core performance and the tab fails to deliver it so. On paper Tegra 3 with 1 GB DDR2 Ram looks like a good combo but it’s not, maybe there is another version of Tegra 3 installed as the performance Tegra 3 delivers in other tabs is simply more than this. There is a lag when HD games are played, even there are some app crashes without any error message which sometimes cause a pain. Apps takes little longer to open and even lag while scrolling the home screen which was absent in the other ICS tabs. This may be a software issue and can be fixed by an OTA software update but considering the display it may be difficult.

Not so bad battery life, If we say about the battery life it is satisfactory on very heavy usage it lasted 13 hours may be on moderate usage you can just get a day or more, it is good especially if we consider its resource hungry Full HD display.

Not worth of your money, if we say that this tablet is value for money then it will be false. Yes the tablet has a great display, an excellent sound speaker, very well built but still it’s not that good as the overall performance is not up to the mark.

There may be further software updates that may fix the software issues till then in our verdict you should gamble with Asus transformer Infinity which is a value for money product.

  • Excellent Display
  • Good sound
  • Excellent for watching movies

  • Performance issues
  • Outdoor visibility problem

I own an acer tablet a700 and I’m really happy I was concerned about the performance issues he had heard, but I really feel very fluid the tablet, I received two software updates, and everything goes faster no delay.
